Shader Grids, WebGPU, and Pressing Reset | June 07, 2026
This Week’s Highlight
Continuing with my shaders series, and this week, it’s all about repetition!
If you’ve been here a while, you know how much I love coding grids (cols and rows for the win). Well, tackling repetition shader-style completely unlocked a new mental model. Instead of nested loops, it's just one formula to rule them all.
I’m loving this new way of thinking. It flips a new switch in my brain (and maybe yours too)!
What Inspires Me
Check out this portfolio website by Samuel Honigstein, built using Three.js and its new Shading Language (TSL), which targets WebGPU natively but falls back to WebGL.
Honestly, a lot of 3D portfolios throw way too much at the viewer (this one included, imo). That being said, it’s still a great reminder of why realtime web graphics are so exciting right now and exactly why I’ve been so eager to dive into shaders lately.
Pulling apart these setups has me wanting to build my own. I may or may not be cooking up something... 🤓
Pressing Reset
I’ve recently started climbing.
It’s been a minute since I’ve thrown myself into a completely new environment, physically pushing myself outside my comfort zone on a wall while simultaneously stretching my brain with shader math.
There’s a great mental reset that happens when you’re a beginner again. Whether it’s physical or technical, it’s just good practice to occasionally step away from your default settings.
What are you currently a beginner at?
Until next week!
